FUNdamentals – Community Sport
This workshop will give you all of the tools you need to hit the court with confidence as a youth or community basketball coach.  Over the course of seven hours, this in-class and on-court workshop will help you:

  • Understand the level of athlete you are coaching (typically children between the ages of 6-10)
  • Equip yourself with basic tools to plan safe, fun and effective practices
  • Learn how to teach basic basketball skills from a games approach in a fun and inclusive way
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP?
  • Anyone with limited or basic basketball experience who wants to get involved at the community level to coach children’s basketball
  • Parents/guardians volunteering with their child’s basketball program
  • Coaches looking to transfer their coaching knowledge in order to acquire games approach drills and an understanding of this age group
  • Assistant coaches that want to further their knowledge of basketball and contribute in building their athlete’s skills

WHO WOULD YOU COACH?
You would coach players with little to no previous basketball experience – typically youth aged 6-10 in the FUNdamentals stage of Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD).

Learn to Train – Introduction to Competition

Learn to Train – Intro to Comp
This two day workshop is the suggested pre-requisite for Train to Train and provides an exceptional foundation for your coaching career.  You will also be introduced to new coaching methods that will enhance your coaching and your program’s effectiveness.
Through a mix of classroom and hands-on learning in the gym, this workshop focuses on:
 
  • Developing a strong understanding of Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD) and how it relates to your athletes
  • How to break down and teach fundamental basketball concepts (including: shooting, loading, dynamic warm up,  1 sec advantage, spacing, footwork and error detection/correction)
  • How to load a basketball skill and drill
  • Developing an effective practice plan
  • “Make Ethical Decisions” – a must-have skill for every coach and an NCCP requirement for all sports

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP?

  • Coaches working with competitive youth players in the Learn to Train stage of LTAD
  • Coaches looking to enhance their knowledge and effectiveness in coaching youth
  • Coaches looking to transfer their coaching knowledge in order to acquire “games approach” drills and an understanding of this age group
WHO WOULD YOU COACH?
You would coach a community, club or junior high team with players in the Learn to Train stage of LTAD (athletes aged 11-16 depending on their development/experience).

Time: 8:30 – 5:00 pm both days
Cost: $295 + GST for Basketball Alberta Members, $575 + GST for non-Basketball Alberta Members

Train to Train – Competition Advanced

Advance your coaching with this workshop designed for coaches of athletes in the Train to Train stage of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD).
Building on Canada Basketball’s Learn to Train workshop, through a mix of classroom and hands-on experience in the gym, this 17 hour workshop focuses on:
  • Micro teaching in order to learn to provide support to athletes in training
  • Designing activities that develop both technical skills and athletic abilities
  • Planning a practice that reflects seasonal training priorities
  • Identifying appropriate activities for each part of the practice
  • Analyzing performance including error detection and correction
  • Supporting the competitive experience
  • Advancing coaching in the progression of skills and concepts (conceptual offensive components shooting, whole-part-whole teaching and incorporation of mental training)
  • Designing a basic sport program

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP?

  • Certified Learn to Train coaches looking to take the next step in their coaching career
  • Dedicated youth coaches that are looking to provide young athletes in high school grades with the proper training to facilitate good basketball habits and skills to maximize athletes’ abilities
WHO WOULD YOU COACH?
Athletes ranging from community and club teams to competitive play in the Train to Train stage of LTAD (athletes aged 12-16 depending on their development/experience).

Basketball Alberta usually schedules NCCP clinics in the fall and the spring. Basketball Alberta can schedule NCCP clinics for your organization at any time.
